August 1st is National Day in Switzerland, the equivalent of the USA 4th of July, with fireworks and barbeques.The Swiss National Day is inspired by the mention of "early August" in the Federal Charter of 1291. It was first celebrated in Berne in 1891, marking the 600th anniversary.
Following a public vote on 26 September 1993, it was made an official national holiday in 1994. It is celebrated each year on 1 August with town-wide paper lantern parades, bonfires, hanging strings of Swiss flags and fireworks.
Switzerland celebrated its 718 th anniversary on 1 August 2009. This fabric flag (120 meters by 120 meters) was hung on Mt. Santis and was the second largest flag in the world.......until the wind tore it to shreads.
